BEYOND WORDS — SEASON 2, 2026 AUDITIONS

Melbourne Youth Ballet Company invites dancers to audition for our contemporary mixed-bill season, Beyond Words – Season 2, 2026.

This performance season will bring together emerging dancers and industry choreographers to create a collection of contemporary and neoclassical works. Dancers will take part in an intensive rehearsal period, working collaboratively with choreographers while developing their artistry, performance quality, and versatility.

Beyond Words offers young dancers the opportunity to experience the creative process of contemporary dance within a professional and supportive company environment.

AUDITION DETAILS

Audition Date: Sunday 7th June 2026
Location: Melbourne Youth Ballet Company Studios
2 Lee Street, Carlton North VIC

Audition Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes per group

Age Groups

Dancers will audition within the following age groups:

Junior
Ages 13–14

Intermediate
Ages 15–17

Senior / Advanced
Ages 18–22

Age is calculated as of June 2026.

Audition Format

Auditions will be conducted as a group class in front of the MYBC artistic panel.
No solo performance is required.

Audition Class Breakdown

Dancers will participate in a 1 hour and 20 minute audition class, structured as follows:

Ballet Warm-Up – 20 minutes
A short classical centre warm-up to prepare the body and establish alignment.

Ballet / Neoclassical Phrase – 20 minutes
Dancers will learn a phrase drawing on classical and neoclassical movement vocabulary.

Contemporary Technique – 20 minutes
Movement exploration including floor work, weight shifts, and dynamic transitions.

Contemporary Phrase – 20 minutes
Dancers will learn and perform a contemporary phrase as a group.

Audition Attire

Dancers should wear attire that allows clear visibility of lines and freedom of movement for both ballet and contemporary sections.

Female Dancers

• Solid colour leotard

• Convertible tights

• Ballet shoes

• Pointe shoes (Intermediate & Senior dancers – please bring if applicable)

• Hair neatly secured in a bun

• No skirts, jewellery, or stage makeup

Male Dancers

• Fitted dance top or leotard

• Black tights or fitted dance pants

• Ballet shoes (black or white)

• Hair neatly styled away from the face

Dancers may be asked to remove ballet shoes during the contemporary section.

Requirements

All auditioning dancers must have a strong foundation in classical ballet technique and an openness to contemporary movement styles.

Audition Results

Successful applicants will be notified via email following the audition and invited to participate in the Beyond Words rehearsal intensive and performance season in July 2026.
